Reflecting Our Savior: Lessons from Matthew 5

By Nate D. Long, Head of School

Reflecting Christ Through the Beatitudes

I pray that as you have focused on what it means to ABIDE in Jesus, you have been blessed as you have pursued Him. I've recently been in the book of Matthew during my personal study time. As you read chapter 5, I believe Jesus paints a beautiful picture of what it means to reflect a life that abides in Him. He begins the Sermon on the Mount with the Beatitudes, and it's not all sunshine and rainbows. It does not depict a perfect, tranquil, easy way of living. It comes with difficulty, persecution, and challenge.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

— Matthew 5:3-12

As we continue to pursue living a life that Abides in the Lord, let's remind ourselves that this journey is not necessarily an easy one. However, it is a worthy calling — one that Jesus believes we can pursue and calls us to pursue daily. When we do, the world is a better place because we are reflections of our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.

This week I will be praying that we can reflect the attitudes of our Savior to those around us, that He will shine brightly, and that we would be made less.

Gracefully,

Nate
